He was undoubtedly Bafana’s best player leading to the 2010 World Cup. During the Confederation Cup, Khune saved David Villa’s penalty against Spain to introduce himself to the world. While Khune was at the peak of his powers in his mid-20s, Ronwen Williams had just started his professional career. Having come from the SuperSport United academy, ‘Rony’ had a brilliant debut in 2012. He kept aAt the time, the current Bafana captain was starting his career, Itu was winning Player of the Season awards and inspiring Chiefs to Cup doubles. Injuries and loss of form affected Khune in the 2014/15 season and was unable to play in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Although for years, there have been doubts about the Gqeberha-born keeper’s abilities, he proved his worth at this year’s Afcon. Williams inspired South Africa to a third finish in Ivory Coast having made crucial saves along the way.
