They’re unwanted, and their chants disgraceful, but experts say authorities have their hands tied when it comes to preventing white supremacists from taking to the streets.
As refugee protesters celebrated 100 days of around-the-clock campaigning, about 20 masked neo-Nazis confronted them, before policeOfficers chased away the neo-Nazis — clad head-to-toe in black — as demonstrators cheered. The group of neo-Nazis later returned, brandishing a banner that read “f--- off we’re full”, before ultimately moving on and cleaning themselves up in a South Melbourne park.
“It’s the same size. It’s only about 20 or 30 young men who are prepared to actually meet and participate,” Roose said. But, in the absence of Nazi symbols or salutes, there was nothing to stop protests with “uncomfortable” or offensive messaging, O’Sullivan said. The laws are expected to bolster penalties, make it easier for Victoria Police to prosecute offenders, and separate the offences of incitement and making threats.
Police could demand protesters remove masks when there was a pre-organised “designated” demonstration, Roose said, but neo-Nazis did not notify authorities about their action.
