The hosts explore how the coach-player dynamic, especially with star players, can shape team success in the NBA.
Former Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has a proven track record of rebuilding teams, displaying his capabilities again with a rebuilding Pistons team.Player-coach relationships significantly impact team dynamics and success. The All-Star selection process is highly competitive in the Eastern Conference. What up, Cavs Nation? I’m your host, Ethan Sands, and I’m back with another episode of the Wine and Gold Talk Podcast.
There’s nobody that I can think of that’s been better in the NBA at rebuilding stuff, instilling a culture, like getting guys to buy into a certain kind of style. I think the thing that we have learned about JB is that this is his wheelhouse. know, like every coach has different strengths and weaknesses.
you know, Kate Cunningham surrounded by shooters can be dangerous and it has been dangerous and it’s allowed him to take the next step in his evolution and become what I think is going to be an all star this year. so it’s, you know, everything that, that I praise JB for, and I tried to give him recognition for, because of what he did for the Cavs.
And that’s what becomes really, really difficult with these. You’re talking about the best of the best. You’re talking about 12 spots in each conference for All-Stars. And then you start like rattling off the names and you’re like, my God, there’s only four more spots for me. You know what I mean? So like there are six locks for the Eastern Conference All-Stars. Six. It’s Giannis, it’s the two guys in Boston, Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown. It’s...
How do you put LaMelo in instead of Darius? How do you put LaMelo in instead of Trey? Like at some point, I totally get the fan voting and they’re always going to be a part of this process because they are a huge part of the NBA game. But there’s nobody that can convince me. You know, so that was part of the discussion when it came to NBA commissioner Adam Silver picking the replacements. you know, the Cavs don’t have to worry about that because it’s going to be in the Bay area and that’s the Western Conference and not the Eastern Conference. But I just think stylistically, it’s going to be hard for Jarrett to be, you know, in the all-star conversation, consistently, annually.
Look at Kenny Atkinson with these calves. Look at what happened when the calves made the switch from David Blatt to Ty Lue. It didn’t mean that David Blatt was doing a bad job, right? Just like it didn’t mean that JB Bickerstaff was doing a bad job with the calves. But, you know, a lot of people, all these decision makers inside the organization that are always on the hot seat, that are striving for championship level basketball.
Usually there’s a trickle-down effect for the entire organization. Like when the Cavs switched from David Blatt to Ty Lue, there was a different buy-in from LeBron James. Duh! There was a different buy-in from Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. Like the minute that the Kings went away from Mike Brown and they went to Doug Christie, there was a different buy-in from De’Aaron Fox. It’s just the way that it goes.
