Longtime NFL quarterback and current St. Michael coach Philip Rivers said recently he didn't see himself ever going full time into an NFL commentating role.
Fox Sports announced this week that Brady had agreed to a long-term deal to be that network’s lead analyst on NFL games following his retirement as a playerRivers, who retired following the 2020 season and is now coaching high school football at St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Ala., has said several times that he has had dialogue about a similar move to the broadcast booth.“I think I would have a hard time with there not being a scoreboard so to speak,” Rivers said on Sports Talk 99.
Rivers said, in his first year out of the league, he did watch the NFL closely, especially the Colts -- the team he spent the last of his 17 years as QB with in 2020. Rivers’ first St. Michael team went 6-3 in 2021, winning more games than the school had won in its previous five years combined. The Athens, Ala., native was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame last weekend and will be inducted into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame next month.
“When our season ended last year at St. Michael, that was the first time – after about a week – where I really missed it,” he said. “I hadn’t really missed it before that because I got here in March and we were rolling – spring football and summer and the season – and then all of a sudden, it was Nov. 5 and there was no football. I was like, ‘This ain’t right. We still got November and December.’ I missed it a little bit.
