At first glance, Paddington in Peru seems to be getting outstanding reviews, with a current score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, when compared to the first two Paddington films, it's clear that reviews for Paddington in Peru are actually much more divided. 2014's Paddington and 2017's Paddington 2, in comparison, have Rotten Tomatoes scores of 97% and 99%, respectively.

William Bibbiani of TheWrap bluntly stated that the newest Paddington film"stinks." Comparing Paddington in Peru to the previous two movies, he wrote that it's"exactly the kind of bland, forgettable dreck that we probably all expected the Paddington movies to be in the first place.
Dougal Wilson stepped into the director's chair for Paddington in Peru, taking over from Paul King. Paddington in Peru actually serves as Wilson's feature film debut. Prior to Paddington 3, he was known for directing commercials and music videos. Therefore, it's possible that Wilson just wasn't qualified to take control of the beloved Paddington series.

The Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Knight are two major examples of this being the case. Therefore, Paddington 2 can join the group with the two aforementioned sequels, and Paddington in Peru can join the group which includes the likes of Return of the Jedi and The Dark Knight Rises.
