IUP women's basketball punches ticket to National Championship game

The IUP women’s basketball team is just one win away from taking home gold as the Crimson Hawks are heading to the NCAA Division II national championship. It is the first time in program history that the team will play for a national title, and three local players are part of the run.

Why not win close games? Why not make a deep tournament run? And now, why not win a national championship? For three players from our area, the moment is even more special as they prepare to represent IUP on the biggest stage in D2 basketball. The Crimson Hawks are headed to their first ever national championship game after knocking off Colorado Mesa in the Final Four on Thursday night. Starter Belle Bosch, a Chestnut Ridge graduate and transfer from Pitt-Johnstown, finished the game with nine points and eight rebounds. Hollidaysburg graduate Marin Miller helped run the offense, adding three points, all in critical 4th quarter moments, while committing just one turnover as the team’s primary ball-holder. And freshman guard Bella Vent, another Hollidaysburg grad, continues to soak in the experience during her first college season. The players say that the support they have received this season is the reason why they have made it this far."The support has just been insane. The number of people that come to our games, we feel their energy and their love and playing for them is just insane. The fact that it just happens to be in Pittsburgh, and it could be anywhere in the world, but the year we made it happened to be in Pittsburgh; our families are able to come because we're from local areas, so just to be able to do it for everyone else. I think it's just a really fulfilling feeling."According to them, what makes this team different is the bond they have built off the court. "I just think that the belief in each other is really what gets us to this point. And we match each other's competitive energy; we all want to win so bad. We're going to give all the energy that we have to win for each other because we hate to lose. I think every single one of us believes in each other too, which is so great and you can feel the feeling of that." The players add that they wouldn't want to be playing in the championship game with anyone or anywhere else. "Really any of us could be starters and play the whole game; shoot whatever shot we wanted on a team that's not as good as this team; you could transfer within the conference and be a big deal, but we love to win and we hate to lose so bad that none of that stuff matters to us."For the local players on the roster, it’s a chance to make school history and maybe bring a national title back to Indiana.IUP will take on defending champion Grand Valley State in the NCAA Division II national championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m., at the UPMC Cooper Field House in Pittsburgh. Two Carlisle High School students went to the Carlisle Area School District's board meeting last week, discussing the school's handling of their club.Upper Allen Police are on the scene of a standoff where police believe one person has barricaded themselves in the house with a firearm.Fire police told CBS 21 that York City Police are investigating a shooting on East Church Avenue by Penn Park. This is a developing story.
