NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. expressed frustration with NASCAR's officiating decisions during the Brickyard 400.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. is disappointed with the way NASCAR dealt with the climactic moments of the Brickyard 400. The incident in question, involving Ryan Preece's crash on Turn 2, has stirred controversy and debate across the racing community with several drivers already making their opinions known to the media.
Ryan Preece's spin in Turn 2 was the precursor to a series of contentious decisions. He spun, hitting the wall and damaging his tires, rendering him and his car completely immobile and arguably a hazard on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's sprawling 2.5-mile track. Despite this, NASCAR officials delayed throwing the caution flag, a decision that allowed Kyle Larson to seize the white flag before the field was neutralized under yellow flag conditions, ultimately handing him the win — his fourth of the season.Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn't hide his annoyance, arguing that it was evident well before Larson reached Turn 4 that Preece's car was going nowhere.'He spins out. I think he hits the wall, got flat tires, he's off out of the way. But then he tries to right his car and gets it out there towards the racing surface and onto the apron and so forth. But he's in the way now. And he's spinning his tires. As I watched it live, I felt like that I personally realized Preece was not going anywhere before our leader got to Turn 4,' Earnhardt explained on his podcast, Dale Jr. Download .'There's gonna be a ton of people that will have a frickin' timeline. Like a perfect amount of here's how long they have to decide.'NASCAR's Senior Vice President of Competition, Elton Sawyer, defended the timing of their decision. On SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, he stated, 'We like it to play out naturally. We want teams to race to the checkered flag, we did everything we possibly could to make that happen. We kept an eye out on the 41, he was giving it an effort to get going, he had flat tires, he wasn't going to move, and we had already taken the white.'Earnhardt, however, was unsympathetic towards any justification that the decision was tailored to accommodate teams' fuel strategies. 'I don't care about guys running out of gas, that's their problem, they put themselves in that situation. I don't think that NASCAR should try to avoid throwing the yellow because it might ruin a strategy for several cars. That's their — NASCAR's decisions and race control and race teams' strategies, should never be going out to dinner. So, I don't want that,' he declared.
