Severance creator Dan Erickson explains where Ms. Cobel's loyalties lie after that explosive finale. 'She's not there yet. [Lumon] has been her whole life, and she can't break away.'
Severance creator Dan Erickson explains why Ms. Cobel remains loyal to Lumon Industries in the season 1 finale. After premiering in February to universal acclaim from critics, Severance has introduced audiences to a world where employees of a biotech company, Lumon, chose to have their work lives and personal lives “severed” into an “innie” and “outie” persona via a unique form of brain surgery.
“I loved that moment [in episode 8], because she's been completely beaten down by this company that's been her whole life, rejected by them and basically spat out. I wonder what would have happened in her basement if Mark hadn't knocked on the door. That was rock bottom, and then suddenly, there was this knock at the door, and I think for her, being invited to this party was this moment of realizing,"Is there a life outside of this? Am I more Mrs.
By saying"she's not there yet," Eriksson similarly implies that someday Cobel may ally with her employees. Nonetheless, it's safe to say that she burned the bridge between Mrs. Slevig and Mark now that his family knows her true identity. In a sense, the end of the Mrs. Slevig charade leaves Cobel with no other option than to fight for Lumon. Without her life as Mark’s neighbor and Devon’s nanny, she has no life and/or family other than the one with Lumon.
