MM was right to go back on his word.

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys season 5 finale,"Blood and Bone.

"With The Boys officially coming to a close, the iconic superhero series successfully overcame its criticism to deliver a satisfying and impactful ending. Most characters got the fate they deserved, but despite MM making a promise to Stan Edgar earlier in the season, he interestingly decided to break it in the finale. Against the odds, MM managed to be one of the few original The Boys characters to survive until the end, securing himself a happy ending.

Unlike his comic counterpart, MM is a human throughout the entirety of Prime Video's adaptation, as he outright refused to take Temp V, yet he still walked out of the series in one piece. While his mental state wavered over the course of season 5, things changed in the penultimate episode when MM revealed the origins of his The Boys nickname, putting him back on a more heroic path.

Therefore, after defeating Homelander, it was no surprise that MM wanted to move on with his life and be with his family again. Interestingly though, this meant breaking his promise to Stan Edgar, as he claimed that he would kill Stan if he ever retook control of Vought. Despite their conversation being civil for the most part, MM told the antagonist that he'd put a bullet in his skull if the day ever came when he was running Vought again.

Lo and behold, that's exactly where the crafty businessman ended up in the finale, yet MM didn't deliver on his threat, but there's a good reason he decided to break this promise. MM Was In A Much Darker Place When He Threatened Stan Edgar The reason behind MM breaking his promise is rather simple; he was in a much darker place when he threatened Stan's life.

Although he was back to his usual self by the end of the series, The Boys season 5 gave us a different MM for much of the installment, as he was colder than usual, finding himself frequently agreeing with Butcher. His usual OCD was gone, and he didn't have any hope of surviving the war against Homelander or seeing his family again.

That's why he continuously threw himself into danger, even fighting a supe one-on-one with no other goal than to kill or be killed. With this in mind, it's fair to say MM wasn't his true self when he threatened Stan. That doesn't mean he doesn't believe the Vought CEO is good for the world or that he deserves to live, but dedicating his life to killing supes and stopping Vought has already taken its toll on him throughout The Boys.

So, after successfully helping take down Homelander, the OG Boys member decided to put these days behind him, focusing on being a husband and father instead. Going after Stan would've risked reopening that closed chapter of his life, potentially alienating him from his loved ones all over again.

Fortunately, he's learned from his past mistakes, and while it is rather sinister that Stan is back in control of such a powerful corporation, given his outlook and murky past, MM has his priorities straight now that he's in a better state of mind, hence why his attention is on his family and their future, which is what truly matters. The Boys Gets MM's Happy Ending Right All signs throughout season 5 pointed towards MM dying during The Boys' ending, yet somehow, he got one of the happiest conclusions of everyone.

This pleasant surprise was well-deserved though, given everything he'd been through, and the show certainly got his final moments right. In recent times, MM has been disconnected from his family, but that's simply down to the fact that being around them while fighting such a dangerous battle would do more harm than good. Even though he lost hope at times in season 5, his loved ones were still a driving force behind him continuing to fight.

He's also a naturally good person and was one of The Boys' least morally compromising characters, even deciding to save Countess Crow during his darker arc. Getting to remarry his wife and be with his daughter again is exactly the kind of peace he earned, and taking in Ryan shows that he's still looking out for others.

Letting MM finally rest and be the family man he was supposed to be is a much better payoff than him delivering justice to Stan Edgar, as it would only continue this cycle of violence.

Sure, it would've been nice to see Stan face more consequences in The Boys, but not at the expense of MM's happy ending. 278 8.7/10 7/10 The Boys 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Action Drama Crime Comedy Release Date 2019 - 2026-00-00 Showrunner Eric Kripke Directors Erin Moriarty, Karen Fukuhara, Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Eric Kripke Writers Eric Kripke Franchise The Boys 9 Images Close Cast See All Creator Eric Kripke Powered by Expand Collapse
