The Mets are signing superstar slugger Juan Soto on a 15-year, $765 million deal.
during the race for the superstar slugger, but owner Steve Cohen reportedly was not convinced that the outfielder would end up in Queens., Cohen and Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns had a secret meeting with Soto, his inner circle and agent Scott Boras at Cohen’s home in Boca Raton. The meeting went well, but Cohen still thought that Soto would remain in pinstripes as the Yankees had a clear advantage: he would hit in front of Aaron Judge.
“I was being logical. When you have Judge, it’s tough to beat that,” Cohen said. “Juan was great. But what they had … I didn’t know how to solve that.” Cohen, of course, was ultimately successful in bringing Soto to the Mets on a 15-year, $765 million contract, the largest deal in professional sports history.
Soto’s deal includes a $75 million bonus, an opt-out after the fifth year and it does not have any deferrals, according to multiple reports. The 26-year-old had the best 162-game season of his career in 2024 with the Yankees, hitting 288 with a .989 OPS and posting career highs in hits , run scored and home runs .After Juan Soto, will Mets add an ace to staff?
