Why Lori Loughlin and 15 other parents have been indicted on new charges:
Share to twitterActress Lori Loughlin and over a dozen others have been served with a second indictment in the nation-wide college admissions bribery scandal. As almost everyone knows by now, dozens of parents of applicants to elite colleges have been accused by federal prosecutors of paying over $25,000,000 to “Rick” Singer for various fraudulent services over a seven-year period. This included schemes to inflate test scores and to pass applicants off as recruited athletes.
Dozens of people were indicted on charges including conspiracy to commit mail fraud and over a dozen defendants, including the actress Felicity Huffman but not Loughlin, have pleaded guilty. Now the Federal Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts has issued aThis new indictment includes a charge of money laundering. In addition to the cheating and bribery, Singer and the indicted parents also allegedly passed off the bribe money as a charitable contribution.
In 2018 the Internal Revenue Service was growing suspicious of Singer’s alleged charity, and according to the second indictment, Singer called upon Giannulli and Loughlin to cover for him with the investigator. According to the new indictment: “Singer called LOUGHLIN from Boston, Massachusetts. During the call, Singer said, in sum and substance, that [Singer’s organization] was being audited by the IRS, which was asking about the two payments of $200,000 by the GIANNULLIS.
So to sum up, according to the second indictment, the named defendants not only bribed and defrauded their very privileged kids’ way into elite colleges but they then conspired with Singer to pass the bribes off as donations to help underprivileged kids. Should these indictments go to a jury, one can only imagine the fury these actions will induce. It seems almost inconceivable that the parents will not feel compelled to plead guilty and hope for mercy.
