Here’s the problem: Mara’s message was lost on Tuesday because he said something that strained credulity to the point that it dominated most of the discussion on sports radio and social media about his 15-minute media session.
“The reality is, my brother spends most of his time doing evaluations of college players,” John Mara said. “His grades go into our system and he participates in the draft. All personnel decisions in this building — and this has always been the case — have been made by the general manager and the head coach. When they agree on a personnel decision, they come to me with it and as long as they’re both in agreement with it, I okay it.
None of that matters when the team is 61-100 since 2012. Mara’s poor decisions have opened the franchise to a level of scrutiny that doesn’t happen when the team is winning. Any reasonable person would look at a situation with two unfireable family members in the room when major decisions are made and believe that, contrary to Mara’s insistence otherwise, their voices would be louder than most of the others.“I do not think it holds any more sway,” he said. “That has not been my experience here.
He is changing the front-facing decision makers but not fundamentally altering how the Giants do business. Mara acknowledged his 2017 search for a GM in which only four candidates — including three with deep ties to his organization — is no way to run a franchise.
