Having long created bespoke accessories, this Sydney sculptor with mismatched shoes now feels the time is right for a timepiece.

Aside from footwear – which we’ll get to – Robert Clerc is not a man to do things by halves. The Swiss-born jewellery designer crafts his own pieces, from rings and necklaces to outdoor sculptures and indoor spaces, working from his Sydney home, itself a veritable jewel box from floor to ceiling., Patek Philippe – only now has he been tempted to launch a watch brand. “Jewellery has become very sculptural, so I’m thinking that this is a perfect time for me to make a watch that reflects that.

A glance at the 75-year-old’s aforementioned footwear suggests nothing has changed; Clerc is famed for wearing matching shoes but of a different colour on each foot, a habit he indeed hasn’t deviated from “since I was five years old”. He describes this as a rebellion against the rigidity around him, his parents having met while working in the famously disciplined watch business while his grandmother was a member of one of the families behind the Favre-Leuba manufacture.

Although his plans aren’t final, he’s thinking of pieces crafted in gold, a sculptural case possibly reflecting the scarab motif from one of his current collections, with something special for the bracelet and a movement sourced, naturally, from Switzerland.
