A late-summer heatwave has brought record-breaking September temperatures this week, but cooler weather is on the horizon
criteria has been met for much of England and Wales this week, with Thursday’s temperature surpassing the previous 2023 high of 32.2°C recorded on 10 June.
There is also a continued chance of “tropical nights” for some, which is when overnight temperatures stay above 20°C. According to Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge, temperatures above 30°C in September are not unheard of – however, the length of this current heatwave is unusual.
Projections show that over southern parts of the UK, the chance of exceeding 30°C for two days or more throughout the year becomes sixteen times more frequent by 2070 than it is today Mr Partridge said it is currently “way too early” to tell if this will be the hottest September on record, adding that a few cold nights could “wreck the stats”.
