Doctors may mistake hidradenitis suppurativa for other problems, particularly in the early stages. Here's how to get the help you deserve before you end up in the ER.
There’s nothing worse than trying to deal with painful skin symptoms when you have no idea why they’re happening. If you are Black and have hidradenitis suppurativa you can wait years longer than other people before you are finally diagnosed with the condition. HS causes fluid-filled bumps in places where skin tends to rub together, like your armpits, butt, or under your breasts, and it’s way more common in Black and biracial folks.
There’s a shortage of dermatologists in healthcare overall—particularly those who are Black or skilled in treating people of color—and you won’t always find one on staff in the ER, she says. “There's definitely a need for it, and we have to fill that gap,” Dr. Serrano tells SELF. While a surgeon can treat the painful HS nodules, you probably won’t get the follow-up care you need to address the underlying inflammation that’s causing the problem, she explains.
