The first photos of the stage for Sunday's AcademyAwards reveal a set that is both intimate and completely bonkers.
If all the world’s a stage, then the 2022 Oscars stage is a world from a galaxy far, far away. On Thursday,released an exclusive photo of the set for Sunday’s 94th annual Academy Awards, and it’s a doozy.The image depicts the Dolby Theatre bathed in fluorescent blue light, with swirling, geometric neon lines twisting and turning against a black backdrop. It’s reminiscent of
and perhaps similarly disorienting, as it’s difficult to tell where one curve begins and another ends. Given the lighting and color palette, the stage also has some seriousundertones, to the point where you almost expect the late Regis Philbin orto magically appear and ask a nominee if they’d like to phone a friend. The blue-and-black swirls—which get more compact the further upstage you go—also vaguely look like whales jumping out of the water at SeaWorld.
The combination of the swirly stage and the dinner theater seating creates an absurdist venue that feels both intimate and completely bonkers. It’s like Willy Wonka and Beetlejuice did a collab but gave up halfway through. Or a place where Effie Trinket might announce the next
