The first strike in the history of the state university began Monday

in a post on the university website that the school had offered to increase salaries for full-time faculty members, teaching assistants and graduate assistants by 12% by 2025, including a 3% lump-sum payment to all the faculty unions over the first two years of the new contract, the president said.

A university spokesperson did not immediate respond to request for more information about the university’s latest proposals. The unions are seeking:5% raise in the first year; a 3% raise in each of the first two years of the contract, plus a 2% lump sum payment in the first year and 1% lump sum in the second year and a 2.75% increase in the third and fourth years, according to the unions.

No wage increase until the third and fourth years of the contract, with an across-the-board raise regardless of length of service, according to the unions.Five years of guaranteed funding for all teaching assistants and graduate assistants paid for by the administration; an additional one-year appointment for TA’s and GA’s unable to complete their degree due to pandemic delays; include graduate fellows in the bargaining unit with TA/GAs, with the same compensation and benefits.

Non-tenure track, part-time lecturers must be paid on a “fractional” basis, based on the number of credits taught each semester, “so they are paid equally for doing equal work” and given the same job security and benefits as full-timers. Unions describe the university’s position as having “rejected all substantial proposals.

Holloway said in a statement Sunday night he found the decision to strike “deeply disappointing...especially given that just two days ago, both sides agreed in good faith to the appointment of a mediator to help us reach agreements.”“The university is exchanging proposals on wages and other areas for both faculty and staff and is making offers and responding to counter offers in good faith,” according to Holloway’s statement.
