The San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals are staging a game at Birmingham, Alabama's Rickwood Field, a historical Negro League ballpark, on Thursday.
Four years ago, Major League Baseball made the decision to recognize Negro Leagues as major leagues, on par with the American and National Leagues in its official historical records. As described in Mark McCarter's book Never a Bad Game: Fifty-Plus Years of the Southern League, the Birmingham Barons beat Montgomery 3-2 on Opening Day, and 'every major business in Birmingham shut down' for the occasion.Over the decades that followed, Rickwood emerged as a temple for Black baseball in the segregated South.
