The Guardians of the Globe in Invincible season 4

Invincible season 4 will stay consistent with its previous seasons as it won't be changing or restarting its chaotic formula. The action-packed, intensely high-rated superhero show picks up almost right after where Invincible season 3 ended, with Mark Grayson dealing directly with the fallout of the Invincible War.

The first three episodes are now out, and they reveal a fast-moving world. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Invincible season 4, creator Robert Kirkman and co-creator Simon Racioppa discuss the show's no-reset ethos and why they think it's so important to never forget the previous seasons. When asked about the exhaustive world, the constant threats and conflicts, and the possibility that the superhero system in itself could be starting to strain, Kirkman explains: I don't know if necessarily the superhero system's starting to strain, but we're definitely trying to show a world that is super complex, that many things can be happening at one time. I think when you have a universe as expansive as Invincible, I love the idea of this guy's attacking and this guy's attacking, and which one are you going to deal with? And because a lot of superhero things, comics and shows and things, it does seem to be like,"Well, this guy's going to do this and then this guy's going to do this."And there's a very regimented progression of events. And so I think it's much cooler to just have it be chaos at times and just see how people are dealing with multiple threats at once. The complexity makes sense even for the main Invincible character, Mark Grayson, who is now going into season 4 with a new dark philosophy, which is to kill anyone posing a threat to his family. This new mentality has caught the notice of Cecil and the Guardians, who have now set contingency plans. The first three episodes highlight Mark's approach of shooting first, then questioning later. As opposed to a show like The Flash, where there is a structured format and threats are resolved one at a time, Invincible's cumulative approach is more in line with the comics from which the show is modeled. Even compared to The Boys, which emphasizes long-term consequences in its storytelling, Invincible leans more into a chaotic structure, where the fallout of one event immediately collides with the next. As Simon Racioppa explains: I think it was also just important to show our audience that we just had these two incredibly violent last episodes that had effects on the entire planet and things are not back to normal after that. It's going to take a long time to rebuild and recover from those events, if ever. This first episode of the season is like, yeah, Conquest was just here. The Invincible War just happened. We've not forgotten about that. We're not going to forget about that tomorrow. We and the world and our characters are still recovering from those events and still bearing the wounds and the scars of that. So that was important to us to sort of remind you like,"Hey, yeah, this isn't a reset. Invincible never resets. We are continuing on from where we left off." In addition to this structure, this new season also reflects a strong escalation in scale. The show began with a more grounded, character-forward approach, but now, the characters' repercussions and consequences are expanding into new planets and galaxies. This leads to multiple large-scale threats, reinforcing that the show is constantly in motion.
