I sit at my desk, looking through my window at the full moon and try to find ways to keep the answer to that question relatively short. It would take all of time to explain all the reasons. Momma passed away after the devastating earthquake in Syria at the age of 92.
She suffered a stroke from the scare that took her life three days later. Last week, II thought maybe I can write about what she taught me. What rises to the top of my memory pool is her critical thinking. Momma was a critic and always asked the why and the rest of the W’s, and she never accepted anything unless it was near perfect. Notice that I wrote, near perfect. In her vernacular, that would be, perfect. Momma sought perfection in everything she did. And as a result, and despite being the fourth child who was spoiled rotten and learned at an early age that life is easy, I did manage to seek some of this near perfection, in some of the things I did — mostly — in my writing. Yes, momma has a lot to do with me always learning and wanting to be a better writer and photographer. I watched her from a young age refuse to accept mediocrity, and I learned to do the same, at least I hope I did. In addition to seeking perfection, momma was productive and never wasted any time. Unfortunately, I fail here quite often, but I still try to fill my day with productive things. Momma also taught me to be selective in choosing the important things in life, like my studies, my nutrition, my hobbies and even my dreams. Being choosy was uber important when it came to my friends; momma surrounded herself with people that enriched her life. She was careful discerning who to spend time with, who to engage with and who to learn from. If you read any leadership or self-improvement book, this is one of the first commandments: Surround yourself with people who can enrich your life. Lastly, and for now, momma taught me how to be passionate about life. When she enjoyed an outing, a friend’s company, shopping, eating or whatever activity, she did it with ample pleasure and generous passion. I still remember her on the nights the moon was full and bright in the sky. She would take my little hand in hers, point to the moon while laughing out loud and say, “Laugh, Karim, laugh, and the moon will make all your wishes come true.” Tonight, I peek at the moon through my window again, crack a smile laden with a hint of sadness and make a tiny wish.’ll drink to that: A governor finally takes on New Jersey’s 75-year-old liquor cartel | Mulshine: Gov. Murphy and several restaurant owners say New Jersey’s system of million-dollar liquor licenses is throttling economic growth. The mayor of Clinton says the town's restaurants would thrive if they could serve drinks, but New Jersey's archaic liquor laws restrict the town to one liquor store and one hotel. If so, who gets custody of Disney World? Marjorie Taylor Greene wants a divorce. Not from her husband, she already did that, but from the evil, godless liberals of blue state America. I’m sure it’s a thoughtful proposal made entirely in good faith.| Moran: A law intended to help farmers survive has mutated into a tax scam for the rich. Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster claims a farmland tax credit, which drives up taxes for the neighbors, who must fill the gap.Today, sitting across from Rutgers officials trying to renew our contract, all I get back is a lack of respect. Saleena Ghanny, a research scientist at Rutgers, says the Holloway she and her fellow HPAE workers are beginning to know is a hollow man, a master at saying sweet-sounding words that speak to high ideals but almost certainly not with any substantive meaning, or action.Anger helps us survive a challenging planet. But no one always gets it exactly right. An author and communications professional says he knows he has anger issues so he reached out to a professional to help handle his problem. He learned an important lesson along the way. Don’t miss an issue!
