TV host W. Kamau Bell writes about the inspiration for his new documentary on mixed-race children in the Bay Area.
” wasn’t even really an official shoot. HBO had given us development funds to film some kids just to see if there even was a film in our very loose idea of “talking to mixed kids about their race.”
Half the kids we planned to film with were friends of my oldest daughter, Sami, who was 10 at the time. My producer, Natasha Lewin, had found the other half after contacting local cultural organizations like SOMA Pilipinas. We supplied endless juice boxes, snacks and cheese pizza, and in return, the kids were effortlessly charming and deep and had a sense of humor.
In every interview, after warming up the kids with small talk, I asked the question of the day: “How would you describe your racial mix?” Sumaya looked off into the distance, pondering her answer, and finally responded, “I would think of myself like a mix of, like, well …” After a pronounced pause, she continued, “Basically all my favorite animals. A corgi, a spaniel, husky, llama and shiba inu.” I was taken aback.
