explicitly bans sexual relationships between members, delegates or resident commissioners and their subordinates. Beyond the law, workplace relationships with power imbalances are often ethically suspect, since they can lead to exploitation or manipulation. While Hill has referred to the relationship as consensual in a statement released to the media, and that she, many people would still agree that Hill’s relationship with the younger staffer was unethical to some degree, myself included.
However, it’s clear that much of the criticism Hill faces now is not rooted in ethical concerns. Hill has referred to herself as the victim of ain which Republicans and right-wing media are capitalizing upon her private matters. Indeed, right-wing media have sensationalized the mere fact of her unconventional sex life, and the fact that the third party was a young woman, using words like “throuple,” “steamy,” “racy,” etc.
The scandalized tone of the coverage is a far cry from the way that male politicians’ infidelities and relationships with subordinates are viewed. To name just a few,
