, has earned the title of the biggest single to have never reached No 1 in the UK charts. This energetic, nostalgic hit has even dethroned Oasis’s “Wonderwall”.
In the same way Giggs’s “Talking The Hardest” endures with much of Black Britain and fans of UK rap, the rock-pop hit has remained so popular typically among “mainstream”, whiter Britain – but of course, not exclusively – in such a way that the band from Las Vegas have repeatedly acknowledged the unique fervour with which their British fan base have embraced them.Now, don’t get me wrong. As far as well-crafted songs go, it’s up there. I don’t hate the melody or the instrumentation.
As the song’s then unfamiliar opening electric guitar riff rang out, and the people around me descended into frenzy, that sinking feeling of not being in the know crept over me. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around how I was supposed to dance to it. How everyone knew the lyrics. As someone who was so starved of teenage romance that even a story about being cheated on made me feel a little envious, I felt ashamed for not being able to relate to it.
We all have cringe-inducing recollections like those. But the awkward memory of that try-hard moment, of my eagerness to fit in when I thought myself more of an individual, was the birth of my disdain for that song. It was the musical representation of how willing I was to be a sheep.
