Millions of homeless and housing-unstable youth are struggling with a lack of access to food, shelter, safety — and political power.
At 18, Sharday Hamilton was living in an abandoned house in the Harvey suburb of Chicago. Her baby daughter had been placed with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services after the child suffered burns from a chemical spill. And Sharday was pregnant again. “I was out there with no birth certificate, [no] social, [no] ID,” Sharday told“It was hard to live life without the necessary items.” No one could blame Sharday if voting was the last thing on her mind.
