The pit in my stomach is there. As a meteorologist, certain events cause that feeling because I know the potential impacts as well as my concerns about whether the public understands the consequences. I had this same feel about Hurricane Sandy , Hurricane Harvey , Hurricane Michael , Hurricane Ida , and Hurricane Ian . Those storms caused catastrophic damage and loss of life. Here’s why Hurricane Helene is particularly worriesome.
As I write this early Wednesday morning, Tropical Storm Helene is on the verge of becoming a hurricane. Hurricane hunters flying into the storm continue to find signs of strengthening. In fact, it may be a hurricane by the time you read this.
The storm is projected to make landfall south of Tallahassee, Florida on Thursday. Florida’s Capital City is where I spent my college years, and it is probably going to take a direct hit from a major hurricane . That’s something I never experienced during my time getting three degrees from Florida State University. I told my wife, whom I met in graduate school, that Tallahassee will probably look very different on Friday morning.
Helene’s expected forward speed is a “blessing” and a “curse.” It will move out of Florida rather quickly; however, it will not have much time to weaken as it moves into Georgia. This means hurricane conditions will persist well inland, and the official forecast track has an “H” sitting over southwestern Georgia. This seems to be happening more frequently, but that is a different story for a differentday.
I urge everyone in potentially affected regions to resist the urge to ignore these warnings or view them as “hype.” There is plenty of that out there, and I certainly understand the cynicism at times.
