Wil Spivey of Panama City Beach Fire Rescue told the News Herald no green flags have been flown in at least the 13 years he’s been on the job due to the “moderate degree of hazard present in that open body of water.”

A green flag on a beach traditionally means calm conditions, just what you want to see if you’re planning a day in the water. But officials at one popular Gulf Coast spot said you shouldn’t expect to ever see green flags welcoming beach visitors.
Even on yellow flag day – classified as Medium Hazard with moderate surf and/or strong currents – Spivey recommended people play it safe in the Gulf. “I highly recommend non-swimmers do not enter the Gulf of Mexico without wearing a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device that properly fits, even on a yellow-flag day and even then they should swim near a lifeguard,” Spivey said.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
