Android 16 could be a 'disaster' — here's why.
Android has a serious problem — and it’s now getting worse. This could be the biggest threat to the world’s leading mobile ecosystem since its inception, and time is running out for Google to fix it. Android 16 is currently in beta and due for release as soon as next month.
But Google needs to delay this upgrade before it’s too late.to Android, and they’re doing so with Huawei, which has already departed the Android stable. I warned in 2020 that this would be a likely outcome of U.S. sanctions,And it’s Samsung that has had the most painful Android experience of any OEM this year. Its delays in releasing its One UI 7 wrap around Android 15 were afor the company. Owners of Galaxy phones trailed Pixels by six months in securing upgrades. The fear now is that this happens again with Android 16 and One UI 8.points out: “Why should someone who spent over $1,000 on a flagship Samsung device have to wait for features available on a $499 Pixel?” Google’s own phone is now clearly first amongst equals when it comes to Android. “Google is becoming more like Apple FC Barcelona Star Has Decided To Leave This Summer, Reports SPORT Android shouldn’t have an exclusive club.” Many features “stay locked to Google’s phones indefinitely,” and this “prolonged exclusivity alienates users who do not want a Pixel but still expect the best Android experience.” Security and privacy are now major selling points for flagship phones. They’re also the key gap to iPhone that Samsung more than other OEMs is trying to close. We see this same dance with Android’s monthly security updates. These are released to Pixels almost immediately, while other OEMs must combine with their own fixes and then run these out across the messy Android ecosystem. Samsung, in particular, seems to struggle with this and often runs a month behind Pixel with critical fixes. This has even seen U.S. Samsung outsells Pixel by a factor of more than ten-to-one globally and even in the U.S., the only market where Pixel has a critical foothold, it’s still five-to-one. As such, Samsung owners waiting in a queue behind Pixel owners is ridiculous. There is no Android without Samsung — certainly not if China’s leading OEMs are to depart. The same is not true for Pixel. Samsung should be first, not last. One UI 7 was a disaster for Samsung — but arguably it was even worse for Android. It showcased the weaknesses with the ecosystem and the awkward optics of Google supplying its competitors with an OS, but always coming first in the queue. Android 15 brought significant security upgrades and Android 16 will do the same. The majority of its users should get these quickly, arguably all at the same time. For Android to be a real ecosystem, each new version of the OS should level the playing field. Google should ensure Android 16 rolls out to Samsung’s very quickly after Pixels, if not the same day, week or month. Another headline delay kills the mission. At some point, Samsung will need to ask
