The Giants added special-team standout Taiwan Jones from the practice squad for Sunday night's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
That could be seen as good news for Waller because without him active Sunday, the team would be down to tight ends and one of them — Lawrence Cager — was a limited participant in practice all week with an ankle injury. Daniel Bellinger, the starter at tight end last season, figures to be on the field quite a bit Sunday night with Waller in the Giants’ two tight-end sets.Jones, a 13-year veteran, has been almost exclusively a special teams player his entire career.
He spent the last three years with the Buffalo Bills and was an unsigned free agent before the Giants added him to the practice squad on Aug. 31. The Giants have two tight ends — Tyree Jackson and Ryan Jones — on the practice squad, but the fact that neither one is dressing Sunday probably bodes well for Waller.
