Is it nalaxone, fentanyl strips, and simple vigilance?
More than 100,000 overdose-related fatalities occur each year in the United States, so nobody doubts that the street drug supply is as lethal as ever.
The 10.6% reduction in overdose deaths refers to the most recent 12 months’ worth of data that we have from the CDC -- which are provisional data, which means they’re not complete because there are always uncategorized deaths. When states are finally closing out their vital statistics reports and finalizing annual reports to the CDC, they may identify cases that were previously of an undetermined cause and confirm that they were also overdosed deaths.
There’s also the presence of other additives in the drug supply, such as xylazine – a veterinary tranquilizer -- which potentially is changing what drugs are on the street, how people choose to use drugs, and the risk of overdose as a consequence. Xylazine is becoming more common in a lot of the drug supply -- especially in the Northeast – and fentanyl has been out there for a while, so some have adjusted by doing things like carrying naloxone.
