The Rangers optioned Dane Dunning to Triple-A Round Rock Saturday, but they had a good reason.

, to Triple-A Round Rock. It was the first time since the club acquired him in 2020 that he was sent to the minors.The move seemed strange given the proximity of the date to enlarge rosters and since there seemed to be a viable reason, if the team had sought to put him on the IL, to give him a mental break.Dunning has been the Rangers’ utility pitcher the last two years, moved to the bullpen to start 2023 and was then asked to return to the rotation when injuries piled up.
This move actually gives Dunning the chance to catch his breath and potentially return to the big leagues more quickly than if he had been placed on the IL. Had the club placed Dunning on the IL with arm fatigue, the earliest he could return would be Sept. 15. With this move, he will get several days off to refresh his arm, then pitch at Round Rock. If that goes well, he’d be an option by the end of the week - if the Rangers have a pitching injury elsewhere on the staff.
The Rangers are liable to have some moving parts in the next week. Right-hander Chase Anderson’s contract was purchased from Round Rock for the weekend to give the Rangers more length in the bullpen, but he could just be a temporary fill-in. The Rangerson Monday to face the New York Yankees. Leiter, who pitched Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox, had been added as the 27th man for the two games played last Wednesday.
In addition, having length available behind Leiter is an important consideration. He has not recorded an out in the fifth inning in any of his four starts.Nevertheless, the move with Dunning raises some questions about his future. Dunning, who turns 30 in December, will be arbitration eligible for the second time this offseason. He is making $3.325 million this season. In arbitration, that’s likely to jump to more than $4 million.
