It all started in 1971 on Maple Avenue, when mom of five Amelia Herrera opened the first Herrera’s. The owner didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment. Two Herrera’s restaurants remain open but under separate ownership: Herrera’s Oak Cliff on W. Illinois Avenue and Cafe Herrera on Lamar Street in downtown Dallas. Herrera’s on Harry Hines opened in early 2023 across from Brook Hollow Golf Club. It sold some of the dishes that made the restaurant popular in the 1970s, like the bestselling “2B” Mexican dinner: cheese enchiladas, a beef taco and rice and beans.“I don’t know where I’m going to get my tamales now‚” Busbee said of the closed Harry Hines restaurant. She dined at Herrera’s on its last day.Her love for Herrera’s goes back to the ’70s, when she used to eat at the original restaurant as a student at Southern Methodist University. Another Herrera’s,“I’m not counting them out yet,” Busbee said of the family behind Herrera’s on Harry Hines. “I’m obviously a big fan and I want to see them resurrect it again.”Sarah Blaskovich reports on restaurants, bars and culture in Dallas-Fort Worth.
