How the Texans supported a young coaching staff in a way DeMeco Ryans recognizes

As he assembled his first Texans coaching staff, DeMeco Ryans incorporated principles he learned with the 49ers under Kyle Shanahan.INDIANAPOLIS — One thousand miles away from the NFL scouting combine, a Texans coaching staff that was finally formalized Friday is huddling in Houston while identifying free agents to pursue.

“We know the type of guys we’re looking for,” Ryans said Wednesday. “Our coaches are just combing through to make sure. There are a lot of great free agents out there. But every free agent isn’t for us. So we want to make sure we get guys who are scheme fits and are guys who fit exactly what we want.”

The Texans intentionally infused the rest of the coaching staff with tenured coaches who’ll serve Ryans, Slowik and Burke in supportive roles that the team hasn’t employed in the last two seasons. The support staffing is most pronounced on offense.

Ryans’ strategy emulates what he experienced in San Francisco. The 49ers are the only organization other than the Texans to fire consecutive one-and-done coaches. Ryans joined Kyle Shanahan’s staff following the firings of Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly, and Shanahan supplied a then-38-year-old Robert Saleh, also a first-time defensive coordinator, with a senior defensive assistant by retaining Jason Tarver, who’d been a defensive coordinator with the Raiders and Stanford.
