Daniel Jones has already drawn comparisons to Eli Manning and Dave Brown, two Giants quarterbacks on the opposite ends of the spectrum. But maybe it's time people sit back and allow the young man to develop into his own man.
Share to twitterNew York Giants first-round draft pick Daniel Jones during rookie camp on Friday.
While Jones is looking forward to learning the offense and how to navigate a New York market that is not for the faint of heart, this young man needs to be afforded an opportunity to forge his path rather than be compared to Manning or fellow Duke alumnus Dave Brown, the Giants first-round pick in the 1992 supplemental draft.
“It’s a lot of attention, a lot of passion for what we do and especially for the guy that played that position and we’re very certain that he can handle it.” “To me, I think it is just watching him every day and learning what he does—how he carries himself and how he prepares every week. Being able to watch that and learn from that is an awesome opportunity.”
That process for Jones begins this weekend with learning his way around the team’s facility to, more importantly, learning the playbook.“That is an adjustment from the college level. It is a lot of good stuff. Coach Shurmur has been a whole lot of places, and the way he has explained it to me is that he has taken pieces from everywhere he has been and has put together his own stuff. To me, that is the best of all the worlds.”“There are some similarities here and there,” he noted.
“I don’t focus on it,” he added. “There is a lot to focus on and a lot to learn right now. Being here, learning the offense and trying to pick up a bunch of stuff. I am not sure I can really afford to focus on a lot of that stuff.”
