The NBA’s two newest arenas, Intuit Dome and Chase Center, were privately financed. A proposed new Spurs arena won’t be.
California taxpayers aren’t on the hook for any of the $2 billion it took to build the Intuit Dome , which opened in August and is the NBA ’s newest arena. Los Angeles Clippers owner and billionaire Steve Ballmer paid for the 18,000-seat facility in the Inglewood suburb out of his own pocket, making it the second privately financed modern sports arena. The first, the Golden State Warriors ’ 18,800-seat Chase Center in downtown San Francisco , opened in 2019 at a cost of $1.4 billion.
That includes building them a new arena so they don’t leave for a city that’s willing to subsidize a state-of-the-art facility to entice them to relocate. “Every city in the country would love to have the Spurs,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg told the Express-News in November ahead of a public briefing on “Project Marvel,” a proposed multi-billion dollar sports and entertainment district that could be anchored by a new Spurs arena.
