The imminent signing of Romeo Lavia will push Chelsea's spending to close to £1bn. Here's why they can do it
“Where Chelsea have been very good is selling previous academy players,” says Maguire. “Mason Mount went to Manchester United so they will say ‘we’re guaranteed £55m so we’ve got £55m of income for FFP purposes’.”announced an amendment to its financial regulations whereby clubs can only amortise transfer fees in their accounts for a maximum of five years, regardless of how long a player’s contract is, effective from 1 July.
Since then, all but three of the 21 players recruited have been over the age of 22, and even then each of Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, and Robert Sanchez, are all still young at 25. There is then, it seems, a method to Chelsea’s madness.
