Leadership of the Auburn men's basketball program is staying in the family. Here's why Auburn believes it's the right move
after 11 years in charge of the program, and Steven Pearl, his son and associate head coach, will take over. It’s the move that many expected, and it didn’t take long for Auburn to act. The press releases from Auburn officially announcing Bruce Pearl’s retirement and Steven Pearl’s promotion were sent exactly 32 minutes apart.
No hot boards, no drawn-out coaching search, no interim tag: Auburn was ready to name Bruce Pearl’s successor immediately. "Throughout our detailed process, it became obvious to me and our staff that Steven Pearl was clearly the best fit for Auburn," Auburn athletic director John Cohen said in the release. “His expertise in coaching defense and all phases of the game, his skills as an evaluator, recruiter, teacher and motivator, and his relationships with our student-athletes and staff were paramount.”from assistant strength and conditioning coach all the way up to associate head coach, and now he’s the man in charge. Given when Bruce Pearl announced his retirement and the team Auburn currently has assembled, it’s hard to argue with the logic. Auburn players now have aHiring Steven Pearl full-time rather than just making him the interim solidifies that, giving the current roster a feeling of stability beyond this season. Pearl’s contract is for five years, according to the release, and multiple players, including freshmen Kaden Magwood and Simon Walker, have already voiced their approval of the hire on social media. In the short term, there’s no better move to avoid turnover and a major rebuild than promoting someone who had a large part in putting the current team together. The release claimed that Steven Pearl had “taken the lead” in Auburn’s transfer portal recruiting. The majority of Auburn’s 2025-2026 roster came from the transfer portal this offseason, meaning many players have likely already built strong relationships with their new head coach. It’s hard to project exactly what the hire means for the long term, but if Auburn wants one of Bruce Pearl’s disciples to take over, there’s no one who has spent more time around him than Steven. "There is nobody more qualified or in a position to maintain our culture of faith, family and doing it the Auburn way than Steven," Bruce Pearl said in the release. “He’s actually tougher than I am, and just as competitive!” From coaching under him for 11 years, playing for him for four and being his son for 38, there’s no coach who knows Bruce Pearl better. Obviously, he and his father are two different people. There’s no way of knowing exactly how much he’ll keep the same or change within the program, and it may be too soon to automatically expect him to match or exceed his father’s success right away. After all, this will be Steven Pearl’s first head coaching job, and he’s the youngest head coach in the SEC.. Despite his time within the program and working for his father, Auburn is still hiring someone who’s never done this before. But Auburn’s decision, and its explanation for that decision, show what a Steven Pearl-led program can be at its best. If you want to maintain success, why not go with arguably the second-most important person for creating that success over the past few years? Not everyone will take that view, but it’s the one Auburn is taking. Time will tell if the university’s decision pays off. But for what has become one of the country’s most close-knit and successful college basketball programs, leadership is staying in the family.
