Andrew Yang's recent Democratic Presidential Debate peformance was a masterclass on connecting with an audience in under 2 minutes.
450% Google search spike on the question “What is a Rhodes scholar?” just reinforces how far removed the average American voter is from Rhodes scholar circles. Obviously, virtually everyone on the presidential debate stage has an academic/intellectual pedigree that would evoke the highest levels of admiration , so it seems counterproductive at best for candidates to use precious debate time to point out how much more educated they are than the average voter.
After George W. Bush was elected, many pundits boiled down his appeal to a single word relatability – particularly his plain spoken style. Indeed, they suggested that voters didn’t necessarily gravitate to the most intellectual person in the room nearly as much as the guy/gal they felt they could enjoy a beer with.
In a world where solutions can seem terribly complex and hard to explain , Yang seems to artfully use his limited time to articulate easy to understand voter focused solutions. With barely more than a minute of time to offer anduring a previous Democratic Presidential Debate, he announced a giveaway focused around one of his campaign’s key proposed solutions - the $1,000/month freedom dividend.
