Allison Mack on Smallville in front of Superman breaking chains in DC comics
Summary Allison Mack was a regular fixture of the DC Universe in Smallville where she played Chloe Sullivan, but she only appeared in 6 episodes of the show's final season. Sullivan had the second-longest tenure on the series, behind only Tom Welling, and appeared in 205 episodes, including many of Smallville's most rewatchable episodes. The Superman prequel series pulled the bulk of its main characters from the comic book lore of Superman and Superboy.
Saying that she was coming back for the fans, however, Mack ensured that her character's narrative was set to wrap up: "I didn’t feel comfortable walking away from the show, and my character, without a completion," she continued. Like with the departure of stars like John Schneider, it was important to use Chloe's final episodes as an effective conclusion to the character.
In the finale, following the events of Clark and Lois' wedding, Chloe continues investigating the coming threats. This is true to her character, who has been a dedicated journalist since the premiere episode. Sullivan decides to go to Star City to continue her investigation on her own. Following complex feelings surrounding Clark's powers throughout the series, Chloe realizes that she is a hero of a different sort, too. She leaves for Star City believing more strongly in herself.
In the comic book, Chloe becomes pregnant. To fulfill the flash-forward in the series finale, Chloe gives birth at the end of the comic book continuation. After having had such a difficult time in the series, especially following an ill-fated marriage to Jimmy Olsen, the comic book allows Chloe to have a satisfying conclusion to her character finally.
Mack pleaded guilty to charges of racketeering and was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021. After serving 21 months, she was released in 2023. While much of her involvement would have occurred during the production of Smallville, co-stars Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum seemed unaware of it. In 2019, on Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You, Welling discussed the matter prior to these charges, stating: "I don’t know what to say, other than if it's true, it's a tragedy.
