Jim Crane, whose Astros Golf Foundation runs the tournament, has made no secret he wants a spring date. Might that be in the offing come 2024?

Jim Crane, right, whose Astros Golf Foundation presides over the Houston Open, joins his wife, Whitney, in celebrating the triumph of Tony Finau in last November's event. The Houston Open was nowhere to be found on the PGA Tour’s tentative 2023 fall schedule released Thursday by GolfChannel.com. But in the tournament's perfect world, that is not a bad thing.

The tour has a mutual wish to get Houston back into the spring, suggesting the strong possibility Houston is in line for such a date in 2024. An ideal spot would be late March or early April, just before that year's April 11-14 Masters. Getting the tournament to Memorial Park Golf Course, where it has been played the past three years, is a huge benefit.

The PGA Tour is going through big changes in a new era. Several designated events have elevated purses near $20 million and guaranteed appearances by the top players in 2023. Not all title sponsors signed up for the big purse increases, potentially opening future spots on the schedule. Crane and Kibbe have gone on record saying the Astros Golf Foundation has a financial model that could allow Houston to fill a spot.
