The famous light installation couldn't withstand the Bay Area's 'harsh environmental conditions.'

Unable to withstand the Bay Area’s “harsh environmental conditions,” the glimmering sculpture shut down March 5 but flickered back on due to some sort of malfunction, Illuminate founder Ben Davis told SFGATE.

“Even the off button is glitching now,” Davis said. The barrage of high winds and salty air, combined with the weight of, has taken its toll on the project's programmable LED lights, he said, and now the organization aims to take them down before they “degrade into oblivion.” “It’s kind of nice to have a little treat of them coming back, but they are fundamentally failing, and the goal now is to replace them,” Davis continued.

He says Illuminate has since resolved the glitch, and while drivers likely won’t see the bridge’s lights accidentally turn on again, the organization plans on officially bringing them back. It has successfully installed the glowing on Twin Peaks, the kaleidoscopic projection at the Conservatory of Flowers and the “immersive” light installation at the Grace Cathedral, among many other recognizable public art projects.
