I'm a 27-year-old surfer who moved to Costa Rica for a more adventurous lifestyle. Living abroad is an attainable goal, and I'm having the time of my life.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Luke McStravick, 27, about chasing his dreams and leaving the United States for a life in Mal Pais, a small town in Costa Rica. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.I never knew anyone that had lived abroad, but after I graduated college in 2018, I wanted to experience something different than what I had ever known. I took a solo trip to Costa Rica to surf and enjoy the beach.

After my visit, I knew that I was always going to come back to the country. However, instead of vacationing, I wanted to live there. I knew Costa Rica was the right place for me The nearest large city is San Jose, which is a six hour drive away. Getting to Mal Pas is also difficult because it is pretty far from the airport. It took us a two hour drive, a ferry ride, and then another hour and a half drive to get there.

One of the most appealing aspects of living in Costa Rica is that it is growing. There is so much opportunity in this country.
