New York mayor Bill de Blasio used his time to prod his entire party to reorient around working Americans. He called the primary a fight “for the heart and soul” of the Democratic Party

Who won Wednesday’s first Democratic presidential debate? On a stage this crowded — 10 candidates debated in Miami — it’s not like there was one clear victor.

“I just want to say there’s three women up here that have fought pretty hard for a woman’s right to choose,” said Klobuchar, prompting a roar of applause. The Massachusetts senator was the only one of the top-five-polling candidates on stage, and she dominated the first half of the two-hour debate. She was the first candidate to be asked a second question, then a third. She was asked her fourth question before anyone else was called on a third time.

Warren’s diminished role gave the other candidates more time and attention. But it also made the debate feel a little junior-varsity, especially with Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris and Sanders waiting in the wings on Thursday night. With a lectern on the extreme stage-right, the New York mayor was, literally, on the outside looking in at the top candidates.

Unlike his opponents, de Blasio stared into the camera, seeking to make a connection with Democratic voters who thus far have shrugged him off — or, based on his low image rating in the polls — have been hostile toward his candidacy. On a night when there was little sparring between the candidates, the most pointed conflict came between former HUD Secretary Julián Castro and his fellow Texan, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

He also gave impassioned answers on immigration, race and gun violence, referencing a man he knew who was shot and killed in his neighborhood last year. But Inslee was able to reinforce the central issue of his candidacy: climate change. And he got important validation from MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, who called on Inslee for the first climate question just as he was trying to break into an existing discussion on racial issues.
