It is useful to clear up the less-than-precise reporting in most media on the funding of the cleanup and rebuilding for the Key Bridge disaster in Baltimore. There is no question that, under current U.
S. emergency relief law regarding highways, the state of Maryland is entitled to federal reimbursement for 100 percent of its cleanup costs and 90 percent of its rebuilding costs. This is true both for natural disasters — floods, fires, hurricanes, etc. — and man-made disasters, such as this one. All 50 states have taken advantage of the additional highway grants that flow from this program. Presumably, pursuing the ship’s owners and insurers will reduce the state’s costs, and thus the federal costs. That said, these federal budgetary obligations cannot be liquidated — paid — without adequate appropriations. Again, Congress has always provided such appropriations. Not doing so would mean that no cleanup/rebuilding efforts could be paid nationwide, and it is highly doubtful that Congress would fail to provide such appropriations.. That rebuild would not have been eligible for funding under the disaster relief program, because the collapse resulted from inadequate maintenance — neither a natural nor man-made disaster. However, Minnesota had the appropriate senior legislators in Congress — one in the House, one in the Senate, one Republican, one Democrat — and legislation providing 100 percent funding was approved. Both the Key Bridge and Baltimore harbor are extremely important to much of the East Coast. One can easily conclude that 100 percent funding is appropriate.Bravo to the growing number of responsible guardians such as Colleen Grablick, who protect cats and wildlife by allowing their feline companions outdoors only on a leash and harness or in a securely enclosed “catio.”be protecting in grave danger — and setting an irresponsible example — by dumping cats on the streets. Cats abandoned this way stand no chance against weather extremes, diseases, traffic, predators, cruel people and many other dangers. They suffer and die badly, all for the sake of making shelters’ “saved rates” look appealing.Cats deserve better. Please keep cats indoors and never support groups that leave vulnerable animals on the streets instead of rescuing them. It is encouraging to see The Post devote extensive coverage to civilian suffering in Sudan and on a war that Western powers are often all too eager to ignore. However, the article failed to highlight the extensive criminal behavior of Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the Rapid Support Forces commander who is better known as “Hemedti.” Human Rights Watch has documented extensive evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity by both the Sudanese Armed Forces and RSF, and of ethnic cleansing in Darfur. The United States has not only a moral responsibility but also an obligation under international law to protect civilians from war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. After mass killings in Rwanda, the Congo and Sudan, our soldiers, scholars and politicians eagerly lined up to say “never again.” Now, it is happening again and the United States has responded with light sanctions and an empty U.N. Security Council resolution. Though there are no good options in Sudan, our failure to act demonstrates shameful cowardice and callousness on the world stage. The United States must do more to protect civilians in Sudan.” reported that Lunchables, a popular brand of lunch food for children, was found to contain harmful levels of lead, according to Consumer Reports. This is concerning because Lunchables are consumed very often by a significant number of children, as they are convenience-food items that are an easy and affordable option for busy parents. As a public health student and an active member of the community, my perspective is that we cannot overlook the possibility that the reported levels of lead in Lunchables could expose children to serious health hazards and risks. This could lead to negative long-term health effects that include cognitive development issues and other neurological problems. What people don’t realize is that reputable convenience-food brands can also contain harmful substances that detrimentally affect children’s health in the long-term. Though convenience is important for families in which parents have busy schedules, it should never come at the expense of overall well-being. It is essential that we prioritize making a change by advocating increased transparency and stricter food-safety regulations within the industry. One thing that would really make a difference is increased regulations that require comprehensive testing measures for food products to ensure their safety. Emphasis can initially be placed on products that are predominantly consumed by children. By implementing a rigorous testing process for food products, we can protect the long-term health of children. The conviction of a mother and father for the sins of their child is beyond comprehension. It defies every tenet of American jurisprudence. Obviously, these parents did not participate in the unthinkable act of murder committed by their son. There are three charges that a person can face even if they did not participate or know that someone was about to commit a crime: accessory before the fact and accessory after the fact and felony murder. These parents did not plot or plan the murders, which is accessory before the fact. They did not cover them up or shield the defendant, which is accessory after the fact. They did not drive a getaway car during commission of the crime, which would be felony murder.Parents struggle every day to pay their bills and take care of their children and are grateful for a good night’s sleep. If a child has a mental illness, the parents should not be presumed to know the diagnosis and consequences. They love their child and will defend them come what may. The paradigm of parenthood is not constant suspicion or investigation into the mental state of their child. It is based upon love, commitment, devotion and knowing that if their child faces a struggle, the parents have their back. American jurisprudence demands that you separate emotion, revenge and bias from judgment. So, if you are going to lock up these parents for lack of focus in the context of struggling to raise a family, then lock up the spouses of those who commit crimes, lock up the sisters and brothers of those who commit crimes and lock up the teachers, friends and babysitters. The slippery slope of these convictions is obvious and entirely contrary to justice under American jurisprudence — and the chilling effect these convictions will have on adoption, foster parents and parenting in general will be felt across the nation.,” Fareed Zakaria notes that the void created by secularization is at least partly filled by populism, nationalism, authoritarianism and support of Donald Trump on the political right. Left unsaid is that the much more secular liberal side of the political spectrum is hardly immune to the trend. Since at least the 1960s , secular progressives have been filling Blaise Pascal’s “God-shaped hole” with theology-tinged causes. The historical list is long, but current enthusiasms seek the faux-Eden of equity, salvation through the elimination of fossil fuels, redemption from the original sin of structural racism and playing God via the physical transformation of the gender dysphoric. It is not a defense of Trumpism to simply acknowledge the obvious: that to much of the secular left, politics is their religion. Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels is believed to have said, “If you tell a lie big enough, and repeat it often enough, people will eventually believe it.” Mr. Milbank’s statement that Donald Trump’s lies are catching up to him affords us little cause for optimism. He must fool only some of the people much of the time to achieve the minimum number of electoral votes he needs to secure his election. The Post welcomes letters to the editor on any subject, especially those that expand upon the ideas raised by published pieces and those that raise valuable questions about The Post’s practices and choices.
