Ty Simpson is heading to the NFL Draft. How will Alabama replace him at quarterback in 2026?
once again has a quarterback-sized hole to fill in its lineup. Crimson Tide starter Ty Simpson announced on Wednesday that As the 2026 season begins to approach, Kalen DeBoer and staff will need to pick a new starter.
Here’s who the main options might be to replace Simpson. If he opts to stick around and not enter the transfer portal for a more guaranteed starting job, Mack seems like he would have a real chance. The rising redshirt junior has spent two seasons on the bench in Tuscaloosa, after he followed DeBoer from Washington. Mack was Alabama’s primary backup quarterback this season. He saw action to end the year in the Rose Bowl, after Simpson suffered a cracked rib and had to leave the game. Mack went 11-for-16 passing for 103 yards in that game. He finished the year with 228 yards and two touchdown passes. “Coming out of high school a full year early at Washington, I kind of knew my plan for myself was that I want to develop like Tom Brady,” Mack said before the Rose Bowl. “I know everybody has a different path. Ty has had his own path. I have had my own path. Keelon has his own path. For me, it’s really just getting ready for that opportunity and knowing that when that time comes, I will be ready.”The highest-ranked quarterback of the group out of high school will surely want to compete for the starting job in his second season. Russell told reporters before the Rose Bowl loss that he was locked in on returning to Alabama after preserving his redshirt in 2025. “We’ve talked about almost every week,” Russell said. “Like, it’s a learning moment. Like I keep saying, it’s a learning moment. You know, being patient is just what you have to do sometimes. Ty waited four years to get this job, and he really is like my inspiration. Seeing him just being him, learning so many things over the last four years.” Russell was a five-star prospect out of Duncanville High School in Texas. He was an early recruiting win for DeBoer and company, who flipped his commitment from SMU.Alabama has certainly not indicated that its latest crop of true freshmen will be major players for the starting job. However, if one of them is, Thomalla is the higher-rated option coming out of high school. Thomalla joined Alabama early, taking part in bowl practices ahead of the Indiana loss. However, the offense favored by DeBoer and Grubb can take some time to learn, putting him at a disadvantage, at least for 2026. The youngster was a four-star recruit out of high school, at Millard South in Nebraska. The 247Sports composite ranked him as the No. 7 quarterback in the 2026 class. The second quarterback Alabama took in the 2026 class, Kaawa joined up from Orem in Utah. He was rated as a three-star prospect by the 247 composite. “Between Jett and Tayden, I just love what they bring, from arm talent, winning mentality, just go-getters,” DeBoer said when the recruiting class signed. “It was important for us. And they both knew that each other was coming, I mean we’re very transparent. With that. And I love that. I love that they’re open to competition. Competing with the other guys in our program that are really good already and then both of them going in as freshman in the same class.” Even if DeBoer and the rest of the staff really liked Kaawa out of high school, he still seems like a long shot at the starting job.It remains possible that Alabama goes out and adds another arm to the mix. Whether that player would come in and compete for the starting job or simply provide veteran depth would be an interesting question. If Alabama can hold onto both Mack and Russell in the coming days, bringing in a third veteran to compete might not make sense. Starting-caliber quarterbacks are expensive, and perhaps UA would like to dedicate that money to other positions of need. The portal is open for undergraduate entry through Jan. 16. Players who enter can sign with a new team at any time.Matt Stahl covers University of Alabama sports for AL.com. He joined AL.com in July of 2023.
