Who will be the 1st LB taken in the 2023 NFLDraft?
Iowa’s Jack Campbell is the slight favorite and I agree with that assessment. Campbell is a decorated Hawyeke through and through. He departs the program as the 2022 Butkus Award Winner. Campbell also earned All-American honors and was named a permanent team captain. Iowa’s coaching staff thinks the world of Campbell, and they’ve been sharing that opinion with inquiring NFL clubs.. Campbell was also an elite tester at the NFL Scouting Combine, having run an elite 6.74 3-cone .
Campbell checked a lot of boxes in Indianapolis. He should be the first linebacker drafted as a result.Trailing not far behind Campbell is Arkansas’ Sanders . A fluid athlete, Sanders has three-down potential that blends a downhill, thumping mindset with coverage abilities. Sanders is extremely fluid for a 6-foot-4, 235-pound linebacker.
Campbell fills and fits gaps in the run game. In coverage, Campbell reaches his landmarks in zone coverage and crowds middle-of-field throwing lanes for opposing quarterbacks. A former EDGE, Campbell’s first-step explosiveness is notable and he plays with a red-hot motor on a snap-by-snap basis. Sanders is still new to the linebacker position, but the sky’s the limit considering his rare traits.Simpson entered the 2022 college football season as the consensus top-ranked linebacker.
Simpson isn’t a talent that should be pigeonholed by traditionalists, however, and that makes his draft stock difficult to figure out. Simpson must be afforded the freedom to impact the game in a variety of ways at the next level. Explosiveness and length allowed Simpson to be deployed as a hybrid rusher, overhang defender in zone coverage, third-level safety, and as a traditional EDGE defender at Clemson.
Simpson isn’t a one-size-fits-all prospect. Arizona’s initial difficulties to implement Isaiah Simmons into their scheme is an example of the challenges posed. But Simpson’s rare athletic traits could lead to a back-half-of-first-round landing spot. Don’t sleep on the value his versatility carries.
