I am not a skateboarder.I hadn’t known existed but suddenly coveted: expensive cotton socks by niche brands like Anonymous Ism and Thunders Love for between $30 and $50 a pair; really expensive socks by Isabel Marant and Aries priced between $50 and $100; and cotton socks for which Balenciaga, Celine, Off-White and Versace felt entitled to charge more than $150.
But, when Vogue.com covered the June Adidas x Gucci launch and said the “best part” of the collection was that “prices start at $235 for socks,” my head exploded. Nordstrom currently sells a pair of black-and-white Bottega Veneta “ghost pattern” crew socks for $420. Who is buying these socks?
