As we approach the 2022 college football season, it’s time to look back at some of all-time greats in the SEC.

After listing the all-time greatest offensive player for each SEC school on Thursday, we’ll list each school’s all-time greatest defensive player today. This is an entirely subjective list, though criteria such as All-SEC and All-America recognition, national awards and NFL success were considered .Linebacker Zach Cunningham is the only unanimous All-American in Vanderbilt football history.

The USA Today National Defensive Player of the Year as a high school senior in Florida, Peterson was the very definition of a “shutdown” corner during his three seasons at LSU. After starting as a true freshman in 2008, he became one of the top players in the country as a sophomore. Peterson totaled 52 tackles, two interceptions and two defensive touchdowns in 2009, earning first-team All-America honors.
