Some have wondered where the money will come from to acquire Moses Rose's Hideout for a new Alamo museum and visitor center. We have the answer.
That's a much harder question.
The Texas General Land Office, Alamo Trust and the city of San Antonio have offered up to $4 million and a relocation option for the bar at 516 E. Houston St. But owners Vince Cantu and Elizabeth Hardwood Cantu have rejected that offer, instead requesting $10 million: $6 million for the property and $4 million for the business.
The Cantus say their offer is final, and that they'll likely sue if it's rejected. Looming over the couple is the threat of eminent-domain proceedings to force a sale of their property. However the transaction comes about, Kate Rogers, executive director of the Alamo Trust, said funds to purchase Moses Rose's Hideout will come from a $50 million allocation approved by the Legislature in 2021 for the current 2022-2023 biennium.
