GENEVA - World Health Organisation member states agreed during their main annual assembly on Monday to delay a controversial discussion on granting Taiwan observer status, despite the United States and others stepping up pressure in recent days.
Pompeo said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who has been harshly criticised by US President Donald Trump’s administration, “had every legal power and precedent” to include Taiwan in the meeting. Taiwan has enjoyed remarkable success in combatting the pandemic, with only seven deaths and some 400 infections despite its proximity and close commercial links with mainland China, where the disease was first identified.
