The Big Picture In 1982, one of the best horror movies of the decade was released when Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist hit theaters. The story about a family under attack by a supernatural entity in their home was terrifying, but it was nearly overshadowed by its own self-made controversy simply because of that first sentence.
Spielberg made the controversy much worse in the same interview when he said, "Tobe isn't what you'd call a take-charge sort of guy. He's just not a strong presence on a movie set." Spielberg added that if Hooper didn't answer one of his questions quickly enough, he'd jump up and say what to do, and Hooper would nod in agreement. "That became the process of collaboration.
In a 2010 interview at the French l'Etrange Festival, Tobe Hooper said that in the first two weeks of shooting Poltergeist, he was running out of time and needed a second director, so he asked Steven Spielberg to help out. Hooper said:
